Fire Prevention Checklist - Business
- Fire Extinguishers
Each Fire Extinguisher should have a minimum rating of 2A:10BC.
Fire Extinguishers are required based on the type of hazard at your business.
A portable Fire Extinguisher must be available within 75 feet of travel to all sections of the building.
Fire Extinguishers must be unobstructed and clearly visible.
Fire Extinguishers must be serviced once a year by a Fire Extinguisher company. (Note: some states require Fire Extinguisher companies to be licensed and certified.)
If flammable liquids are present, a Fire Extinguisher rated 2A:20BC must be within 50 feet of travel distance.
- Exits
- Combustible Materials
Combustible materials must be kept at least 3 feet away from heating appliances.
Flammable liquids should be stored in approved container, cabinets or safety cans.
Combustible materials are not to be stored under a staircase.
- Address Numbers
Numbers that indicate the building address must be clearly visible from the street side of the building.
- Electrical
Wall outlets and switches must have cover plates and should not be overloaded.
Cords and cables must be in good condition.
Extension cords must be U.L. listed.
- Trash Dumpsters
The dumpster should be at least 5 feet from any building window or opening, or have a sprinkler head above it.
- Fire Alarm
If a Fire Alarm system is present, it should be in working condition and tested tested by a Fire Alarm contractor at least once a year.
- Fire Sprinkler/Standpipe Systems
If a Fire Sprinkler system is present, it should be in working condition and tested tested by a Fire Suppression contractor at least once a year.
There must be at least 18 inches clearance below the fire sprinkler heads.
All exit doors, corridors and stairways must be clear and unobstructed.
All exit doors must open with-out locks or bolts.
Exit doors may not be locked from the inside during business hours.
